Forest School at SS John and Monica

In addition to our usual classroom activities, we offer children the chance to take part in Forest School learning sessions throughout the year. This is an innovative and exciting development, which originated in Denmark and was brought to the UK in 1995.  We employ the services of a qualified and highly experienced Forest School teacher who comes into school one day per week.  The Forest School at SS John and Monica has been running since June 2007 and children from across the school have had the benefit of sessions aimed at building their self-confidence and self esteem.

Sessions include such activities as listening to the sounds around us, observation activities, “1,2,3, Where are You?” (A kind of Hide and Seek), mud painting and building shelters. With the older children this may also
cover tool use and fire safety.

The school provides weatherproof clothing for the sessions, dungarees, jackets and wellies for the smaller children and rainproof jackets and trousers with wellies for the older children.

We conduct our Forest School sessions throughout the year and in all weathers – rain or shine, though we do not take children out in instances of high winds, extremely heavy rain or electrical storms.
